What does it do? It converts unbalanced signals, which typically use a 1\/4\" jack, to balanced signals, which typically use xlr connectors. \u003cspan\u003eA DI \u003c\/span\u003e(DI stands for direct input) \u003cspan\u003eis especially beneficial for longer cable runs; it allows for more length without noise due to the use of a low impedance xlr microphone cable. A 1\/4\" unbalanced instrument cable has just 2 conductors, the center conductor and the shield. The center conductor carries the positive portion of the signal and the shield carries the negative portion of the signal. This is why these cable are more susceptible to noise. The balanced xlr cable has 3 conductors, 2 to carry the positive and negative portions of the signal and a separate ground, which is the shielding. This provides far superior noise rejection. Low impedance balanced cable lengths can be much longer than unbalanced instrument cable lengths, which are functionally limited to the 20' range. With the Harp Shield, your microphone is muted when not playing. The pedal has a SENSITIVITY control to prevent background noises from opening the audio path and inducing feedback. In the event that feedback does occur, just press the footswitch (a momentary switch) to reset the pedal and stop the feedback. When using this pedal, it is still necessary to use proper microphone handling techniques to help prevent feedback while playing. The Harp Shield differs from guitar noise gates in that the gate range is set for microphone levels and the fact that you will not lose any tone. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eUPDATE 10\/21\/12 - In response to some questions that I have received, I am adding the following information. The pedal requires a minimum level of signal from the mic to open the gate and when the signal drops back down to the same minimum level the gate will close. This function is not noticeable with the sensitivity set low (CCW) but is noticeable with the sensitivity set high (CW); but this is only a factor when playing softly. The pedal is not a silver bullet; it has its limitations. One is when the room acoustics are horrible for feedback, small and hard-walled (like a spare bedroom); it does not help at all. The second is a tight band setting that is very loud (all too common); this is due to the fact that when the sound levels hitting the microphone are too high, it can keep the gate open. In the last instance, one must also roll off the volume on the microphone when not playing. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cb\u003eSETTINGS\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe only control is the SENSITIVITY control. With the control all the way CCW, the pedal is most sensitive and will allow virtually any signal to pass through the microphone. But the mic will be more susceptible to low-volume noises opening the pedal and inducing feedback. Turning the control CW, increases protection from feedback by requiring a higher level of audio to unmute the microphone and pass the audio. With the control turned too far CW, you may not be able to pass audio while playing softly. The footswitch is not a bypass switch; the foot switch is a momentary, non-latching switch, pressing the switch mutes the microphone (kills the audio) and resets the gate, stopping feedback. The pedal is essentially an active 2-band equalizer with a range of 20dB in gain to a reduction of 20dB in level for both bass and treble frequencies. The BASS control works far better than the BASS control on amps because it is tuned to include mid bass and lower mid-range frequencies; this is where the majority of a harmonica's lower frequencies reside. You can increase or decrease your BASS and TREBLE frequencies as well as lower your VOLUME to control feedback or increase your VOLUME if you want a little gain for solos. The Harp Tone+ does not eliminate feedback, but it does help control it. And it has a true bypass. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWhy 20dB in gain? The 20dB in gain for bass frequencies is necessary because they are so low in comparison to the mids and the highs that are produced in harps. They are there, but they are at a very low level. This pedal is ideal for increasing bass frequencies in your tone. It is also ideal for amps with no tone control, for increasing volume during solos, for decreasing feedback, and for giving the harp player more control over his tone when playing through a PA. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe Harp Tone+ makes any guitar amp a good harp amp. How? By providing the gain necessary to drive bass frequencies through the low-value coupling capacitors. If feedback is a problem and the amp starts to feedback too early due to the excessive preamp gain found in all guitar amps then by lowering the VOLUME on the Tone+, you can counter that excessive gain, and now turn the amp's volume up to a much higher level where the VOLUME control setting will not be as critical in relation to feedback. Plus, if you have a speaker that is poor on bass response you will now be able to push it harder with higher-level bass frequencies and bring it to life. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eHow does the Harp Tone+ make any mic a better mic? This ability is possible by the ultra high input impedance, the gain available in the bass frequency range, and the VOLUME control that helps control feedback or add volume, whichever your needs are. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cb\u003eSETTINGS\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eSet the volume on your amp to around 8 and then turn back (CCW) the VOLUME control on the Tone+ until feedback stops. Then set the BASS and TREBLE to your preference and fine tune your volume with the volume control on your amp. When held\/cupped tightly, I hear the microphone compress more than a 57 can, and thus it’s capable of a bit more distortion or break up.
